Evaluation task 1

Title:

Titles can be really important in a trailer, because a title can sometimes sell the soap. By doing research, most of the top soap have their titles named after the locations the soap is set. So to “take a page from their book” we did the same thing in hope that it would have the same effect for us.

Setting:

Setting is really impotent when it comes to a soap, because you’ll be seeing the locations on every episode of the soap. So choosing the location had to be taken seriously. Seeing as some of the cast are still in school we thought it would be a good idea to have the school as one of the settings. A social gathering spot is commonly seen in all soaps so it was crucial to have one in ours (the pub).

Costume:

As for costume, most of the cast are students so they would be wearing normal student attire. But for characters like Lindsey who is an amateur model, she had to be dressed appropriately. By giving her clothes that more suit her role, the soap would be more realistic, for example if she was wearing clothes that don’t match her career or ‘title’ then the soap wouldn’t have much realism to it.

Font + Style:

I wanted to approach the title of our soap effectively so it would have a large impact in the trailer. So seeing as the title was named after the street the soap is set, I decided to make the style of the title the actual street sign, adding realism to the soap.

Narrative:

The narrative of the soap is really crucial in selling it and gaining views. As a group we found out that the more storylines there are the less bored the audience get because most storylines drag on for a while. So by have a new storyline each week the audience are more entitled to watch what ‘happens next’. We also linked each storyline to each other in some way or another to try and enhance the dramatic effect on the audience.

Genre:

Soaps don’t really have a specific genre other than drama, and drama normally comes from within a group of people or within a community. So within our storylines we tried to incorporate some sort of drama in each of them. We linked each storyline to each other in some way or another to try and enhance the dramatic effect.

Character:

We thought long and hard about what type of characters we should include in our soap. So we started asking people what they’re favourite character type would be. Most of them said they want characters that would portray important issues in real life. And issues such as sexuality, we thought that it would reach out to those who are going through issues with it. By having characters that relate to the audience it would be really effective in attracting those people to watch the soap.

Sound track:

The sound track for a soap trailer really sets the mood of what the soap is about. The more dramatic and tense the soundtrack is, it gives the audience an incite that there will be a lot of drama going on within the soap.
